A gym is a great place to get in shape, but it can be too expensive for many senior citizens and others. If you don’t have a fitness club membership, consider an at-home DVD instead. Research shows that these kinds of programs can help older adults get in shape — and we know that physical fitness staves off decline and disability. If you’re nervous about picking a workout that’s right for you, talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner, who may be able to recommend something for your particular fitness level
