Misc Tip ’Tis the season for humidifiers. Keep yours clean in a few easy steps.
Humidifiers add welcome moisture to dry winter air, relieving dry noses, throats, lips and skin. However, it’s important to keep your unit clean, since it can be a breeding ground for microorganisms. Here’s how to do it: Every third day, empty the tank and brush or scrub it clean. If you notice that scale has built up on the unit, scrub it off. If your humidifier came with specific recommendations for cleaning products, follow them. If not, simply wipe it clean with a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Then rinse the unit several times before you run it again to prevent the peroxide residue from going out into the air. And, of course, look forward to smoother skin and fewer sore throats.
