In one study, subjects who stated “I am excited” prior to speaking gave speeches that were longer and judged more persuasive than those who stated “I am calm.” This surprising self-talk trick works because when you tell yourself to calm down, you’re allowing yourself to focus on things that could go badly. When you tell yourself to get excited, you reframe the experience and think of more positive possible outcomes. By focusing on potential opportunities instead of potential threats, you’ll start to feel more confident in your abilities, thus improving your performance. Even if you don’t quite believe it, reminding yourself to get excited might give you the edge you need.
